MAY DAY

Do you know why May 1st is an important day that many workers in the world celebrate?

It is the International Worker’s Day, which is also known as May Day.

On Tuesday May 4th, 1886, at Haymarket Square in Chicago, a bombing took place at a labour demonstration.
It began as a peaceful rally.  Workers were on strike fighting for an eight-hour work day. They had to work between 10 to 12 hours a day. Six days a week, all year long. Children had to work too.

That day a man threw a dynamite bomb. Policemen were being quite violent to disperse the workers. The effects of the bomb were horrible and seven police officers and four civilians died.
Later on, eight anarchists were convicted of conspiracy. None of these workers had thrown the bomb. However, seven of them were sentenced to death. One of them committed suicide in jail. Four of them were hanged on November 11th 1887.
